America Walks, in partnership with the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and YMCA of the USA, is excited to offer a chance to go back to school and measure the efforts of the walking movement through the recently released 2016 State Report Cards.
The 2016 State Report Cards provide a snapshot of how supportive each state is of walking, bicycling, and physical activity for children and adults as of 2016. Attendees of the webinar will learn about the development of the State Report Cards and hear from two YMCA’s on how they plan to use the information to increase support for physical activity. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion on how they can use the State Report Cards in their own communities.
About the Presenters
Brianna Barber head shotBrianna Barber started her YMCA journey as a young adult working at the YMCA of the Treasure Coast in South Florida in 1999. Since that time a variety of roles have shaped her path to YMCA leadership.  Her positions have covered the spectrum of Y employment from swim instructor and coach, to group fitness leader, to day camp director, to front desk supervisor,  and everything in-between.  This level of operational experience has led her to be in a senior level leadership position at each of the four Y’s in Southern Nevada.  Currently, she serves as the Executive Director at the Durango Hills YMCA of Southern Nevada with an association emphasis on Health and Wellness as the cabinet chair for the association.  Her background in kinesiology has played an integral role in making sure that this Y’s strategic plan has streamlined policies for healthy living thus creating a clear direction for the association.  Currently, she is working on creating outside partnerships for successful  implementation of evidence-based chronic disease prevention programming.

michelleliebermanMichelle Lieberman serves as the Technical Assistance Manager for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. In this role, she provides technical assistance through the National Partnership’s emerging consulting program to local communities around the country that are seeking to improve their built environment and Safe Routes to School initiatives. In addition, Michelle develops publications and other resources, assists with local and state campaigns, and runs webinars and trainings.
Prior to joining the National Partnership, Michelle was a community planner with a national planning and engineering consulting firm. There, she provided consulting services on a variety of planning projects for local and regional governments. Her core service areas included public engagement, active transportation, downtown and neighborhood revitalization, and community visioning. Michelle began her career as a project manager and residential designer for a large architecture firm.
Michelle holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona, a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of California, Irvine, and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from the University of Florida. She is a registered architect in California and Nevada, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Jim McGowanA tireless advocate on behalf of people at-risk of, or living with diabetes and other chronic diseases, Jim has played a leadership role in many public policy and legislative successes in his home state of Minnesota and at the Federal level. Prior to joining Government Affairs and Policy of the YMCA of the USA, Jim served as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Alliance of YMCAs. Before that, he was the Midwest State Advocacy Director at the American Diabetes Association. Over the years, Jim also served in several roles as a volunteer with the ADA. As Chair of Government Relations for the Minnesota Area American Diabetes Association, Jim led a state initiative that required insurance coverage to match the American Diabetes Association’s Standard of Care. He served a 3-year term as Chair of the Minnesota Diabetes Steering Committee, which advises the Minnesota State Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP). During that time, the DPCP began several new initiatives aimed at diabetes prevention and treating pre-diabetes, including the creation of pre-diabetes algorithms for both adults and youth, and the development of community-based prevention programs. Jim has been recognized with several state and national awards for his advocacy.
