The US secretary of transportation, Anthony Foxx, will visit Copenhagen next week as part of an inspirational trip to see how the capital caters to its many cyclists.
Foxx will saddle up himself and take a leisurely ride around the city with the Danish transport and building minister, Hans Christian Schmidt.
“I am looking forward to welcoming my US colleague, Secretary Foxx, and for us to tour Copenhagen on bike,” said Hansen.
“At the same time, I look forward to discussing the future co-operation between our two countries. A fruitful, constructive co-operation between Denmark and the US is important in all policy areas, including transport.”
A shining example
Hansen said that the trip would show Foxx how Denmark develops infrastructure that promotes cycling and drives urban development and renewal.
An example of this is ‘Cykelslangen’, the cycling bridge behind the Fisketorvet shopping centre, which is one of the scheduled stops on Foxx and Hansen’s bicycle trip.
Foxx will be joined on the trip by the US ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, and the mayors of the US cities Austin (Texas), Portland (Oregon) and South Bend (Indiana).
Copenhagen is consistently named the most bicycle-friendly city in the world.
